Sigulda Evangelical Lutheran Church

The Sigulda Evangelical Lutheran Church is one of the oldest parishes in Latvia, founded in 1225. The first church was likely wooden, while a stone building is mentioned from 1483. It was supported by the local noble families of the Borchs and Kropotkins, whose donations – altar paintings, chandeliers, and memorials – still testify to their patronage. In 1930, the present reinforced concrete tower was built according to the design of architect Konstantīns Pēkšēns, and the altar was adorned with J. R. Tilbergs’ painting Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane. During the Soviet era, it was the only functioning church in the wider region, attended by believers of various denominations. Today, it is notable for its cozy atmosphere, interesting exhibitions, and the opportunity to climb the tower for a beautiful view over Sigulda.
