Zemgale (Nikolai) Gate – Neo-Gothic Fortification in Daugavpils Fortress

Located in the southern part of Daugavpils Fortress, the Neo-Gothic Zemgale (formerly Nikolai) Gate was built between 1824–1827 with unique side rooms once used by guards and prisoners during the Russian Empire. In the 1920s, after the old wooden bridge was demolished, it was renamed Zemgale Gate to reflect Latvia’s national identity. During the Soviet era, the gate was bricked up and used for vegetable storage. Restored between 2012–2014, it now features a reconstructed wooden bridge, souvenir shop, bat center, and the historical costume exhibition “Memory Chest.”
