The fountain in Alytus Old Town Square is not just a water feature but a symbol of local history and rebirth. The square is located where a residential and merchant quarter once stood, destroyed by German air raids at the start of World War II. After the war, a square was created here, and in 1977 a fountain and a monument to J. Vitus were installed, which was dismantled in 1990. In 2012, the renewed square was adorned with a colorful, illuminated compass-shaped fountain, decorated with lines from the poetry of Jurgis Kunčinas. In the evenings, the fountain lights up in vibrant colors, while in spring the blooming sakuras – symbols of love, youth, and renewal – add charm to the square. It’s a favorite spot for locals to meet and enjoy romantic walks.
