Proudly standing in the center of Alytus, the “Angel of Freedom” is one of the city’s most significant symbols, dedicated to those who died for Lithuania’s independence. This impressive 13-meter-high monument was erected in 1929 and was created by sculptor Antanas Aleksandravičius. It is believed that a young high school teacher served as the model for the angel. Over time, the sculpture faced many trials: in 1934, it was struck by lightning, and during the Soviet era, it was demolished for political reasons. In 1991, the Angel of Freedom was restored to its original place by sculptor Jonas Meškelevičius, with bas-reliefs by Jonas Blažaitis. This sculpture not only honors the memory of freedom fighters but also symbolizes the resilience of Alytus’ spirit.
