The Sarve–Lehtma defense line in Hiiumaa was built in 1941 and includes 21 concrete machine gun bunkers, locally called “dott” (from Soviet ДОТ, a permanent firing point). These fortified positions were made for 2–3 soldiers each, with minor structural differences. Although the German invasion came from the south, not this line, the bunkers remain a unique WWII military heritage site. One bunker in Heltermaa is now a cellar, and another in Sääre serves as a foundation for an RMK viewing platform. Some are overgrown and hidden in the forest. This is the most intact defense line in Hiiumaa.
