Osmussaar Island, located off Estonia’s northwest coast, is home to a unique WWII military site – the 130 mm coastal battery. Built in 1941 to defend the Baltic Sea coastline, it was the island’s only firepower for the first two months of war. Soviet artillery was abandoned during evacuation, and from 1942 to 1944, the German army operated their own guns on the same trenches. The battery was likely demolished in the 1950s. Today, visitors can see three overgrown gun pits and trench remains – a captivating war heritage site surrounded by nature, perfect for military history, coastal defense, and nature tourism enthusiasts.
