This airfield is a former military base on the northeastern edge of Tartu, near Raadi Manor in Estonia. In 1912, Russian pilot Sergei Utochkin made the first powered flight in Estonia with a "Farman" biplane over the manor. In 1914, Baron Liphart converted his fields into a runway. During the interwar period, the 2nd Aviation Squadron was stationed here. In the 1950s–60s, it became one of Eastern Europe's largest air bases with strategic bombers. The last landing was in 1996, and renovation plans were abandoned in 1999. Nearby, the Estonian National Museum in Tartu, a top cultural and historical attraction, was founded in 1922 but burned down in 1944 bombings. In 2016, a new modern museum building opened at the old runway’s end, resembling an airstrip.
