Karuse Church, built around 1260 as a fortress church of the Livonian Order, is one of the oldest religious buildings in the Läänemaa region. This medieval sanctuary is notable for its historical features – a preserved Baroque pulpit and altar inside, as well as 13th-century trapezoidal gravestones and 17th-century stone crosses in the churchyard. Historians believe that Otto von Lutterberg, Master of the Livonian Order who died in a battle on ice against the Lithuanians, may be buried here. Karuse Church is a valuable destination on cultural and historical architecture tourism routes.
