Hanila St. Paul’s Church, built in the 13th century, is one of the oldest Gothic-style churches in Estonia. It is an outstanding example of early traditional architecture, attracting tourists and history enthusiasts. A staircase to the vaults remains in the western wall, while the interior features a Baroque pulpit and a carved altar from 1707.
In the churchyard, you can see 18 trapezoidal tombstones with a blend of pagan and Christian symbolism – a unique cultural heritage. According to legend, a goose was bricked into the wall, giving rise to the name Hanila.
