Balceriškės Hillfort

This hillfort, situated on a prominent hill, features a circular platform with a diameter of 22 meters, historically surrounded by a rampart. The best-preserved remnants of the rampart, measuring 8 meters in width and 0.3 meters in height, are located on the western side, indicating the site's ancient defensive significance. Although cemeteries were established here in the early 20th century, the hillfort's history and past remain intriguing to researchers and visitors. According to legend, a decisive battle with the Crusaders took place here, during which a Lithuanian duke was killed. In his memory, a hillfort was constructed, which is now open to visitors.
Known for its mythologized past and impressive natural surroundings, the hillfort is one of Lithuania's cultural heritage sites that allows exploration of the ancient Baltic way of life, their defensive practices, and rituals.
