The Great Elitis is a remarkable natural monument in Gauja National Park, known as the only natural sandstone arch formation in Latvia. This geological treasure includes a 23-meter-long cave, three adjacent arches, a spring, and a natural arcade. The cave’s total space is about 55 m², and its estimated age is between 6,500 and 7,000 years. In ancient times, this site was considered sacred—the flowing spring carved out the unique Ellīte system, where water seeping through sandstone gradually formed these impressive rock structures. Today, the Great Elitis is a protected geological site, attracting hikers, geologists, and nature lovers seeking Latvia’s natural wonders.
