Located near Līgatne, the Ķūķi Cliffs are the highest Devonian rock outcrop in Latvia, rising an impressive 43 meters. Clay layers above the sandstone contain fossilized remains of ancient organisms. Due to river erosion and landslides, the cliffs are constantly changing—within just a few years, the shoreline has receded more than 10 meters. In the center of the cliffs lies Ķūķi Cave, accessible only during low water, and in winter, breathtaking icefalls form here. A river with multi-tiered rapids flows nearby, inspiring locals in the past to name this area the “Cliffs of Steep Rocks.” It’s one of the most striking natural sites in the Cēsis region, perfect for nature lovers and hikers.
