Rose Square, located in front of St. John’s Church, has been known since the mid-13th century as the old market of Cēsis. In the past, it featured a well and a pillory, and in 1927, the area was transformed into a public square. Today, it is the most popular meeting spot in Cēsis—home to Matias Jansons’ sculpture Ancient Cēsis, regular weekend events, and a summer fountain where children play among the water jets. In the evenings, colorful lighting enhances the atmosphere, and nearby cafés attract both locals and visitors. Each year, the city’s main Christmas tree is also lit here.
