The sculpture Ancient Cēsis, created by sculptor Matias Jansons, was unveiled in 2016 to mark the 810th anniversary of the city. It is a detailed bronze depiction of the medieval city plan, based on the oldest known maps of Cēsis. The sculpture also includes representations of structures no longer present in the city, such as an old mint, the exact location of which is unknown—it is symbolized by an ancient coin. According to the artist, the sculpture has its own legend: if the image of a knight appears when touching the coin, it means that Cēsis will once again mint its own currency. The sculpture has become not only an artistic but also an educational landmark, allowing visitors to explore the historical past of Cēsis.
