The historical site known as Velniakampis or Geležių Hillfort is a valuable archaeological location dating from the end of the first millennium BC to the beginning of the first millennium AD. The historical site known as Velniakampis or Geležių Hillfort is a valuable archaeological location dating from the end of the first millennium BC to the beginning of the first millennium AD. This site, notable for its geographic position near the Sudervė-Dūkštai road (171), offers an impressive glimpse into the past with its exceptional archaeological finds. The hillfort area, oriented north-south, is 65 meters long and 54 meters wide, featuring a unique collection of incised and rough pottery. Key features of this site include a 4-meter-wide and 0.4-meter-deep ditch and an adjacent 24-meter-long rampart, which is 1 meter high from
the ditch level. The hillfort is situated in a picturesque environment, with steep slopes ranging from 20 to 24 meters in height, and is surrounded by historical terraces that further emphasize the uniqueness of the site. Since 1969, the hillfort has also been adorned with planted pines, adding to its historical and ecological value. Visitors can reach this historic site by turning towards Rastinėnai from the Sudervė-Dūkštai road and following the road to Šiurmoniai. A visit to this archaeological site not only offers an opportunity to learn about ancient lifestyles but also to enjoy the unparalleled nature of Lithuania.
