The Vytautas the Great Monument was erected in 2003 in honour of one of Lithuania's most prominent rulers. Although he is most closely associated with Trakai, Vytautas was also closely connected to this place, where he founded the first church and wrote letters to the leadership of the Teutonic Order. The Grand Duke died on 27 October 1430, aged 80. It is believed that his death was caused by a fall from a horse or a rotten ox. The sculpture is a reminder of his importance to Lithuanian statehood and history.
