Less known but historically significant, the Veliuona II Hillfort (also known as Pilaitė) stands in the Nemunas River valley near Veliuona. In the 14th century, a Teutonic Order castle was built here to block the nearby Veliuona Castle, but it was soon attacked and burned down by Lithuanians. The hillfort consists of two mounds where remarkable archaeological finds have been uncovered: hundreds of arrowheads, masonry remains, iron artifacts, and even a fragment of a chess piece. Although the hillfort has been heavily damaged by floods and time, it remains an important destination for cultural and historical enthusiasts exploring the Panemunė region.
