Discover the Church of St. Andrew the Apostle in Velykiai – one of the most beautiful historic sacred sites in the Panevėžys district! Nestled near the Alanta stream, the Church of Velykiai, built in 1839, impresses with its stone and brick architecture and authentic historicist style. Its beginnings were modest – estate owner Vincentas Juozapavičius started building a chapel above his father's grave, and within a decade, Velykiai had its own resident priest and a newly formed parish. In the early 20th century, under the guidance of priests Petras Lebioda and Pranas Tiškevičius, along with architect Antanas Naruckis, the church was expanded with additional chapels and a facade tower. The interior was refurbished between 1928 and 1931: new floors were installed, the roof was covered
with metal sheets, the tower was plastered, and the interior was painted. In 1931, Bishop Kazimieras Paltarokas consecrated the church, granting it special spiritual significance. Despite the hardships faced by the community during World War II – including the tragic death of parish priest Boleslovas Beinaravičius in prison – the church remained a symbol of faith. Today, this cross-shaped sanctuary with its tall tower and stone fence invites travelers and tourists to explore Lithuania’s sacred heritage. The Velykiai parish is also home to the Marijonava Chapel – another site well worth visiting. Traveling across Lithuania, religious tourism, and sacred heritage exploration all come together in Velykiai. Visit this unique church and experience a living touch of history!
