"The Wise Old Man" is one of the most iconic street art pieces in Kaunas, created in 2010 by Žygimantas Amelynas and Tadas Šimkus. Painted on the facade of the former "Lituanika" shoe factory, the mural depicts an old man smoking a pipe, adorned with a cosmic pattern—a symbolic artwork meant to encourage passersby to pause, reflect, and view the city with greater wisdom. The motifs in his clothing incorporate elements of a paintbrush and pencil, referencing the Fluxus Ministry art incubator that once operated here, while his bare feet pay homage to the factory’s shoemaking history. Today, the “Wise Old Man” remains one of Kaunas’s most recognizable symbols, even as it slowly fades due to the deteriorating condition of the building.
