Kaunas Castle is the oldest brick castle in Lithuania, built in the 14th century to defend against the Teutonic Knights. It is one of the most important historical landmarks in Kaunas, marking the origins of the city. First mentioned in 1361, when it was destroyed by the Teutonic Order, the castle was rebuilt several times. In the 16th century, it served as a prison—legend has it that restless spirits still haunt the site at night. Today, Kaunas Castle is not only an architectural monument but also a vibrant cultural hub: it houses a branch of the Kaunas City Museum, and the surrounding area hosts festivals, concerts, and city celebrations.
