Railroad Bridge Complex over the Venta

The Railroad Bridge Complex over the Venta, located in Kurmaičiai village, commemorates historical events from the 19th and 20th centuries. When the railroad was completed in 1872, Vindava Station was established, and between 1904 and 1905, a wooden bridge was built across the Venta River. In 1915, as the Germans retreated, the bridge was blown up, but it was rebuilt after the war with a metal structure. The bridge was protected by red brick towers, which are still marked with bullet holes. According to legend, thousands of people were executed here, and mysterious sounds can be heard at night. Today, a new bridge, constructed at the end of the 20th century, is in use, and in 2007, the complex was included in the cultural heritage list.
