The monument to Matas Veitas is dedicated to the first veterinarian of the Telšiai district, Matas Veitas (1870–1937), who was also an important participant in the Lithuanian national movement. M. Veitas not only treated animals but also taught farmers how to farm and care for their livestock, especially during difficult times. He also worked as a Lithuanian language teacher at Telšiai high schools and was actively involved in the Lithuanian intellectual community, writing and secretly distributing Lithuanian publications. M. Veitas was also a member of the Lithuanian Scientific Society, giving lectures on veterinary issues and answering farmers' questions in the press, helping Lithuanians of that time to create and strengthen the Lithuanian state.
