Tauragė Castle

Tauragė Castle is a historical and architectural symbol of Tauragė, built between 1844 and 1847 as a masonry customs building. Today, it is known as a castle due to its distinctive romantic Renaissance castle style. Initially, a two-story building, it was intended for border detainees, and in 1852, the complex was expanded with a masonry fence, utility buildings, a bathhouse, and a well. In 1866, the building was reconstructed into a prison: corner towers and firing holes were added, giving the ensemble castle-like features. The architecture from this period shaped the appearance of the ensemble, which remains intact to this day. During the Soviet era, in 1971 and 1986, new buildings were erected in the courtyard, but the castle's character remained unchanged. Today, Tauragė Castle is a unique cultural and historical site, attracting visitors with its atmosphere and architecture from the past.
