The Tauragė Post Office Complex is one of the oldest and most important architectural landmarks in Tauragė, built between 1858 and 1861. Designed by architect Slupski, the complex served as an important center of the town, encompassing not only postal services but also other essential facilities such as a horse exchange station, barracks, a hotel, and a tavern. The post station featured two separate resting rooms—one for "clean" gentlemen and the other for servants, postal workers, and travelers.
Today, some rooms of the Tauragė Post Office remain, but it is unknown which side was designated for which group. A significant historical event took place on October 10, 1843, when Honoré de Balzac stayed at the post inn. Here, he wrote a letter to his future wife, Eveline Hanska, which became the only letter Balzac wrote in Lithuania. The Tauragė Post Office Complex not only reflects the history of the town but also illustrates the important role this location played in the mid-19th century.
