Matiškiai Hillfort is an impressive historical monument located in Tauragė District, in the Mažonai municipality, near the Jūra River. A wooden castle stood here until the 15th century, which was reinforced between 1311 and 1314 by the Samogitian nobleman Mažonas. The hillfort's plateau measures 20 meters in length, and nearby, a 1.2-hectare settlement was discovered. According to legend, a perpetual fire burned at the top of the castle. This site is not only an important archaeological object but also a great place to explore the history and nature of Samogitia.
