Founded in 1989, the Joniškis History and Culture Museum invites visitors to explore the region's history and heritage. The museum displays unique 13th-century Zemgale archaeological finds, reconstructions of Zemgale costumes, and weapons and armor reflecting the craftsmanship of blacksmiths.

The museum collection includes the only interwar customs officer uniform in Lithuania, paintings of the Stations of the Cross, liturgical garments, and sacred sculptures carved by Augustinas Ulčinas. The ethnographic exhibition reveals the everyday life of the Joniškis region in the 19th and 20th centuries, while the artistically decorated dowry chests are a visual delight.

The museum also owns the Joniškis synagogue complex, the Mato Slančiauskas farmhouse-museum, and the Žagarė branch. The museum hosts exhibitions, educational activities, and traditional celebrations, including the Christmas market and “Crafts Day.”

The Joniškis History and Culture Museum, founded in 1989, is an important custodian of the region’s cultural and historical heritage, inviting visitors on an intriguing journey through the area’s past. The museum’s exhibits reveal the legacy of the Zemgale tribe, the economy and trade of the Joniškis region, sacred art heritage, and the distinctive features of ethnic culture. The archaeology exhibit pays special attention to the 13th-century history of Zemgale and the material legacy of its people. Unique archaeological finds are displayed, along with carefully reconstructed costumes of Zemgale men and women and expertly forged weapons and armor by blacksmiths. Among the exceptional artifacts is the only surviving interwar customs officer uniform in Lithuania, a testament to the region’s active trade and customs
operations. The sacred heritage exhibit captivates with liturgical garments, paintings of the Stations of the Cross, and unique sculptures carved by the talented Augustinas Ulčinas. The ethnographic exhibit introduces visitors to the everyday life of the Joniškis region in the 19th and 20th centuries – from tools to artistically decorated dowry chests. The museum also oversees the Joniškis synagogue complex, the Mato Slančiauskas farmhouse-museum, the Rudiškiai museum, and the Žagarė branch housed in a Tudor-style chapel. The museum hosts exhibitions, educational activities, conferences, and traditional celebrations, including the Christmas market and “Crafts Day.” The Joniškis History and Culture Museum is a place where the past meets the present, and cultural heritage vividly tells its stories.
