Šilutė's Old Market Square is a historic site where bustling markets were held from the 16th century until World War II. Traders from Königsberg, Klaipėda, and Samogitia gathered here to sell fish and farmers' goods. It is believed that Šilutė's urban development began here, near the first tavern. The square has retained its authenticity, surrounded by old buildings, with a cobblestone pavement hidden beneath the asphalt. Renovated in 2022, it has preserved its historical significance and stands as one of Šilutė's oldest urban heritage landmarks, inviting tourists to explore the town’s history.

From the 16th century to World War II, the Old Market Square was the heart of Šilutė’s social and economic life, hosting large markets. Merchants and visitors from nearby villages, Königsberg, Klaipėda, and Samogitia flocked here to trade fish, agricultural produce, and other goods. It was near this square that the first tavern was built, marking the beginning of Šilutė’s development. For centuries, a unique fish market thrived, making the square a symbol of Šilutė’s cultural and commercial life. The Old Market Square has maintained its authentic character,
still surrounded by historic buildings and hiding its original cobblestone pavement beneath the asphalt. The area remains largely unchanged due to the embankment along the bend of the Šyša River. Located near the Šilutė Manor and the iron bridge, the square served as a trading hub for over 500 years. Renovated in 2022, the square preserved its historical spirit. Today, Šilutė's Old Market Square is a valuable urban heritage monument that every tourist should visit. It is a place where history, culture, and the unique heritage of the Klaipėda region intertwine.
