The Dagilionys Burial Mounds are an impressive archaeological site located near a bend in the Šventoji River, where the river creates steep slopes. These mounds were built by ancient Lithuanians, who buried the remains of their cremated dead here. The construction of a burial mound was a communal effort and an important ritualistic act.
The Dagilionys burial site consists of 13 mounds, with diameters ranging from 6 to 9 meters and heights of 0.3 to 1.5 meters. Four mounds have been excavated, revealing fascinating finds such as a sandstone whetstone and iron three-link horse bits. Distinct trenches that once surrounded the mounds are still visible. Based on the artifacts found, these burial mounds are dated to the 9th–11th centuries.
This site is a significant historical and archaeological monument, providing insight into the funeral customs of ancient Lithuanians.
