Lithuanian hillforts are not only beautiful elements of the landscape but also significant witnesses to history and legend. They tell stories of our ancestors' battles and daily lives. Hillforts typically form on natural hills or riverbanks, which were reinforced with embankments, terraces, and moats. The Jonava district is home to 16 hillforts, with Lokėnėliai Hillfort being one of the most impressive and visitor-friendly. Lokėnėliai Hillfort, together with the Gudžionys Hillfort, once formed a defensive complex with a settlement located between the two. Although part of Lokėnėliai Hillfort's platform and embankment has been eroded by the Lokys Stream, the site remains highly attractive to visitors. It is located just 4 kilometers from Jonava’s
center, along the Jonava-Ukmergė road, with clear signage leading to the hillfort. The site is also steeped in legend. According to the tale, a bear family, the Lokės, once lived here. After the father bear passed away, Lokė and her two cubs set out to find happiness. Tragically, the younger cub went missing, leaving Lokė and the other cub waiting sorrowfully by the stream. Eventually, they turned into a hill, which locals say resembles a hunched Lokė with her cub nestled by her side. This legend adds a romantic and mystical touch to the site’s atmosphere. Lokėnėliai Hillfort is an excellent destination for walks, family outings, or nature enthusiasts. It offers breathtaking views of the Lokys Stream Valley and the surrounding landscapes.
