Until the late 19th century, Jonava had no bridges, and people and goods were transported across the river by ferries. The first railway bridge was built in 1871 and later replaced with a metal bridge in 1873. A highway bridge was also constructed nearby, though today only a single pier in the middle of the river remains as a reminder of its existence.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the railway bridge was fortified with bunkers for protection. During World War II, the bridge was destroyed but was rebuilt after the war using its original supports.
