Kauno Street is the best-preserved historical part of Jonava, still imbued with the spirit of the "Jerusalem of Lithuania." This street vividly reflects the lifestyle of interwar Jewish residents: small one- or two-story buildings with shops on the ground floor and living quarters above. The Jewish community of Jonava was renowned for its trade skills, meticulous craftsmanship, and artisanal trades such as blacksmithing and tailoring.

In the 19th century, with the establishment of a postal route, Jonava became a significant trade center, and the Jewish community developed services related to transportation. A stroll along Kauno Street immerses visitors in history, evoking the bustling sounds of the market and the calls of merchants.

Kauno Street is a prime example of the town's preserved historical fabric, where the spirit of commerce and history can still be felt. Known as the "Jerusalem of Lithuania," Jonava flourished as a trade hub during the interwar period. During the Russian Empire, the Jewish community was encouraged to settle in the town center, around the market square and main streets, to promote trade. The architecture of Kauno Street features compact one- or two-story buildings with ground-floor shops or workshops and residential spaces above. Jewish traders were renowned for their professionalism, selling everything from food products to bicycles and household goods. Jonava also thrived in woodcraft, tailoring, and blacksmithing, with Jewish artisans
leading in these fields. With the establishment of a postal route in the 19th century, connecting the imperial capital to Central Europe, Jonava became an important trade center. The Jewish community contributed significantly to horse-drawn transport and related services. The rich Jewish culture and economic activity, interwoven with the town's history, serve as a lasting reminder of this vibrant community. Walking along Kauno Street, one can sense the spirit of old Jonava: the market's lively hum, the calls of merchants, and perhaps even echoes of its storied past. This atmosphere is vividly captured in Grigorijus Kanovičius's novel Miestelio romansas, where the author brings interwar Jewish life in Jonava to life.
