In the center of Darbėnai, near the church, stands an elegant sculpture of a young man, often unnoticed by passersby. This is a statue of Petras Perkumas, a Salesian monk little known in Lithuania but regarded as a saint in Italy. Born in the interwar period near Darbėnai, Perkumas gained recognition in Turin, Italy.
At just 20 years old, he passed away from a heart condition, but his life—marked by devotion, strong will, and commitment to faith—left a profound impression. Salesian monks continue to collect material in the hope of canonizing him. In Lithuania, Petras Perkumas' name was rediscovered only after the restoration of independence, and his statue now serves as a memorial in his hometown. The story of Petras Perkumas is an inspiration for faith and spiritual strength.
