Bartninkai Church Ruins

The Church of St. Peter and St. Paul in Bartninkai began construction in 1790 by rebuilding an older chapel, a project initiated by the Navininkai elder Jokūbas Žytovičius. The church was built using stone masonry but remained without a roof or ceiling for 10 years. The first parish was established in 1783. The construction was completed by the administrator of Bartninkai Manor, Prince Vincentas Puzinas.
Starting in 1855, priest Jonas Burdulis-Burdulevičius began conducting services in Lithuanian, encouraged teaching in Lithuanian, and oversaw church repairs. From 1915 to 1931, the priest and book smuggler Juozas Šmulkštys served as pastor. After World War II, the church was partially destroyed but was later restored.
