The first wooden church in Alvitas was built around 1615 by Ona Radvilienė, the Elder of Paširvinčiai. In 1804, parish priest Adomas Dilevskis began constructing a brick church, but it was later destroyed. Following World War II and until 2020, believers prayed in the nearby Gauronskiai Chapel.
The Alvitas Church is renowned for its miraculous painting of the 12th-century Loreto Madonna, a replica made of ebony. While the circumstances of the painting’s arrival in Alvitas remain unclear, Grand Chancellor of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Kristupas Zigmantas Pacas, mentioned donations for this painting in his will. His testament also outlined commitments for the construction of the sanctuary and the holding of prayers.
