The Vištytis Windmill, located in the Suvalkija region, is a unique technical and cultural landmark that attracts both locals and tourists. It is the only windmill in the region that has retained well-preserved technological equipment. Visits to this historic site must be arranged in advance with the Vištytis Regional Park Visitor Center.
The windmill was built in 1925 by local resident J. Kanapys on Ilgasis Hill, at a crossroads of three roads. For decades, the windmill operated with wind-powered blades, and people would queue up to have their grain milled. The first technological change occurred during the collective farming era, when the windmill's blades were removed, and milling was carried out using electricity and a motor.
In 1978, an ethnographic museum was established in the windmill, but it wasn’t until 2003
that this unique structure was officially added to the Register of Cultural Heritage of the Republic of Lithuania. The Vištytis Windmill remains not only a scenic landmark but also an invaluable piece of technical heritage.
In 2018, the Vilkaviškis District Municipality decided to acquire the windmill, and restoration work began in 2019. The renovated windmill was officially opened to the public on July 16, 2020. Visitors can now explore the windmill’s history and enjoy breathtaking views of Vištytis from the observation tower at the top.
Plans are in place to host cultural events and activities at the restored windmill, promoting cultural heritage and traditions. It is an excellent destination for both education and tourism, offering visitors the chance to discover the unique history of the Suvalkija region.
