Kiršai, part of the town of Alvitas, is the birthplace of Salomėja Nėris, one of Lithuania's most renowned 20th-century lyric poets. Born here in 1904, she later pursued studies and a career in education before marrying sculptor Bernardas Bučas. At her birthplace near the Širvinta River stands the Bačinskai homestead, which was destroyed during the war. In 1972, a commemorative stone (sculpted by V. Pleškūnas) was erected on its foundations. The site still features lilac bushes, old apple trees, and an authentic well. Today, this location attracts visitors and hosts Poetry Spring events, where the poet’s works are celebrated and read.
