Just a few dozen kilometers from Vilnius, in the Šalčininkai district by the Merkys River, lies a unique place – the Republic of Paulava. At the end of the 18th century, Canon Povilas Bžostovskis established an autonomous mini-state here – with its own laws, coat of arms, flag, and even currency. The palace and estate, designed by Italian architect K. Spampani, were transformed into a progressive farm run by free peasants. Today, visitors can stroll along educational trails among the ruins of the surviving buildings and a commemorative stone. It's one of the most fascinating historical sites near Vilnius!
