The Pavlo Ksaveras Bžostovskis Local History Museum in Turgeliai invites visitors to learn about the history of the Pavlov Republic. The museum exhibits 18th-century manor decorations, documents, publications, folk household items, and approximately 3,000 other artifacts.
In 1767, Pavlo Ksaveras Bžostovskis founded the Pavlov Republic in Aukštupio Merkinė, where he abolished serfdom, granted land to peasants, and introduced a unique self-government system with a constitution, coat of arms, parliament, and a school. The republic lasted for nearly three decades, and its remnants are now one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the Šalčininkai district.
