St. George's Church in Smilgiai

The pride of Smilgiai village is the Baroque-style wooden St. George's Church, built in 1764. The church is famous for its luxurious interior, the 17th-century altar of St. John, and one of the most ornate altars in the Baltic states. In the churchyard stands a 19th-century bell tower, which, it is believed, was built overnight despite prohibitions. During the period of the press ban, the bell tower served as a hiding place for Lithuanian press publications.
