The sundial, built around 1610 in the Kretinga Franciscan Monastery, is considered the oldest in Lithuania. Its creation was inspired by the care of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania’s (LDK) Hetman, Jon Karolis Chodkevičius. The surviving part of the sundial is a 152 cm high, triangular-shaped stone with rounded corners, but without a gnomon.
In 1958, the sundial was moved to the meteorology corner of Kretinga Secondary School. Later, around 2000, it was returned to the Franciscan monastery courtyard, where it now stands in place of the former fountain. This sundial is a unique historical artifact, well worth seeing for those interested in ancient technology and Lithuanian history.
