The town of Darbėnai is known for its "Petriņiai and Poviliniai" feast in honor of the Apostles Peter and Paul, held at the end of June. This celebration unites the community, and its traditions likely began in the 19th century when the brick church of Darbėnai was consecrated in the names of these saints. However, the history of the Darbėnai church dates back even further, to the 17th century. It is believed that the first church here may have been built by J. K. Chodkevičius or the local peasants themselves. Later, this church deteriorated and was replaced by a new wooden church, which was destroyed during the 1831 uprising.

In 1842, Mykolas Tiškevičius, the owner of Darbėnai and the grandfather of the famous Palanga resort founder, ordered the construction of a brick church. Over its history, the church experienced a fire but was rebuilt and remains one of the most significant architectural landmarks of Darbėnai.
