Established around 1795, the Kartenos cemetery has preserved several important cultural and historical monuments. It features a chapel and several small chapels, which safeguard the spirit of the past. The cemetery is the final resting place of Izidorius Beresnevičius (†1886), the founder and long-time parish priest of Kartenos Church, as well as Ona Šalkauskaitė-Mongirdienė (†1911), the mother of writer and physician Vladimiras Mongirdas. The grandparents of the President of the Republic of Lithuania, Roland Paksas – Jonas and Barbora Paksai – also have their roots here. In 1990, a memorial chapel was erected in the cemetery to honor the victims of the 1946–1953 resistance in the Kartenos district.
