When visiting Kretinga's Rotušės Square, you may get the feeling that something is missing. This square, over 400 years old, was once the true center of city life. The Town Hall, which stood in the middle, served as the city treasury, court, and notice board. Later, when Kretinga became part of the Russian Empire, a church was built on the site of the Town Hall, which no longer exists today.
In the current square, greenery and benches invite visitors to rest, while the surrounding views offer a glimpse into the history of Kretinga. Here, you can admire the Lutheran church, the Franciscan sacred ensemble, and the monument to J.K. Chodkevičius. With a little imagination, you can reconstruct the residential houses that once surrounded the square and the bustling markets that took place there.
