Independence Monument in Kretinga

The Independence Monument in Kretinga, located in Rotušės Square, holds an intriguing history. It was first erected in 1928 to mark the tenth anniversary of Lithuania’s independence. The monument was initiated by members of the Lithuanian Riflemen's Union. For a long time, there was speculation about who had created the obelisk – perhaps the renowned sculptor Robertas Antinis? Eventually, it was revealed that the original stone monument was carved by Jonas Akinskas.
After World War II, the monument mysteriously disappeared – it was sunk in the Akmena River. It was only in 1989 that it was discovered during river cleaning works, but the original, damaged by time and nature, was discarded. Following the restoration of Lithuania’s independence, the obelisk was reconstructed and returned to its place in the heart of historic Kretinga.
