One of the busiest intersections in Kretinga is adorned with a unique 12-meter-high illuminated Jubilee Cross, unmatched in Lithuania. This modern monument, visible from afar both day and night, commemorates the 400th anniversary of the Franciscan presence in Kretinga. The cross serves as a reminder of the church and monastery built in 1617, which became the foundation of Franciscan traditions in the city.
The monument's founder, J.K. Chodkevičius, not only contributed to the construction of the church and monastery but also played a role in shaping Kretinga's image as a spiritual center. Due to the Franciscans' activities, Kretinga is often referred to as the "Little Vatican of Lithuania," and the Jubilee Cross reinforces this symbolic status.
