The Gaidžio Chapel of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, located in Salantai, is famous for its legends and mysterious past. It is said that the first church of Salantai may have once stood on this hill, and traces of ancient inhabitants have been found around it. The hill was named Gaidžio (Rooster) due to a mysterious phenomenon – people passing by would be frightened by the strange crowing of a rooster, which ceased only after the chapel was built.

Next to the chapel stands a massive stone, associated
with ancient pagan nature worship traditions. During the Soviet era, the chapel became a popular spot for graduating students – those wishing to pass their exams would walk around it three times. The chapel was also decorated by the Franciscan monk Vilius Orvidas, who created the altar and contributed to the beautification of the surroundings. This place is not only fascinating for its history but also for its mysterious atmosphere, inviting visitors to experience and feel the spirit of the past.
