At the end of August 1941, a tragic event took place at this location when members of the 3rd Company of the 1st Lithuanian Police Battalion carried out mass executions. During these executions, 1,349 Jewish individuals from Pasvalys and surrounding towns, including Vabalninkas, Joniškėlis, Saločiai, Vaškai, and Daujėnai, were killed and buried. This was one of many such executions carried out during World War II. The details of the executions were documented in a report by SS Colonel Karl Jäger, which listed the age and gender of each victim: 402 men were buried in one mass grave, and 738 women and 209 children were buried in another, with the victims being separated by gender to prevent unrest. To preserve the memory and honor the tragic event, monuments have been erected at both burial sites.
