The first Orthodox Christian community in Panevėžys was established in 1841 when Metropolitan Josif Semaška blessed its activities. In response to the needs of the city's military units, a masonry church (now the Church of the Holy Trinity) was built, along with a small wooden chapel in the cemetery. In 1918, the masonry church was returned to the Catholics, leaving the Orthodox community with only the wooden church. This historic church reflects the religious diversity of Panevėžys and is a noteworthy cultural heritage site.
