The Paalkiai hill fort was discovered in 2003 by cultural researcher Ida Stankevičiūtė while she was documenting local folklore in Grabijolai village. Noticing defensive ditches and embankments near the Neris River, Ida invited archaeologists who confirmed that an unknown hill fort had been found. It is believed that the site was larger, but due to erosion, part of the platform has slipped into the river. 16th-century maps show that the hill fort was surrounded by a forest called Alkomis, which may have been considered sacred.
