The impressive Kartenos Hillfort, located in the valley of the town of Kartenos, attracts both lovers of legends and history enthusiasts. It is said that this hillfort was built by the determined Samogitians defending themselves from the Swedish and Russian armies. According to legend, the Samogitian king, while watching the conflict between the enemy forces over the right to attack the fort, said, "veiziekit, karė tena" – "look, the war is there." This is said to be the origin of the name Kartenos.
However, archaeological research reveals that the fort on the hill was not built by the Samogitians but by the Curonians in the 8th–9th centuries. Today, climbing to the top of the hillfort offers breathtaking views of the Kartenos area, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the beauty of nature and history.
